National Honor Society

The purpose of the National Honor Society is to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership, and to encourage the development of character in all students of the Antwerp High School Juniors and Seniors must have a 3.5 grade point average to be eligible for the Society. After their GPA makes them eligible, the high school staff ranks each student according to the other three criteria: Service, Leadership, and Character. The students are ranked from 1-4 with 4 being the highest; then the five-member faculty council adds up the scores and evaluates each student to see if he/she meets the criteria. The students are notified of their acceptance by letter and are invited to the induction ceremony which takes place in the fall.

The motto of the National Honor Society is "Noblesse oblige", a French phrase that translates as "nobility obligates." The dictionary definition is "the obligation of honorable, generous, and responsible behavior associated with high rank or birth." Members of the NHS are expected to behave in a more responsible, more honorable, and more generous manner than those students who are not members. Being a member of the NHS is a privilege that is earned, not a right that is automatically granted.
