Modern US History Teacher: Mr. Lehman
Credit: 1 Prerequisites: (Sophomore Requirement)
This course is organized to present American history and related skills and strategies clearly and logically, in order to convey to students the excitement and importance of the American story.  There will be a continuing analysis and reassessment of the past in the light of the new information.

Honors Modern U.S. History  Teacher: Mr. Lehman
Credit: 1 Prerequisites: (Sophomore Requirement)(Must have a “B+” or higher in previous Social Studies course work or have teacher’s permission)

This course is organized to present an in depth look into American history through a critical examination of historic events while reviewing skills and strategies clearly and logically, in order to convey to students the excitement and importance of the modern American story.  There will be continuing analysis and reassessment of the past in the light of the new information.


Government Teacher: Mr. Lehman
Credit: .5 Prerequisites: Grade 12 (Senior Requirement)

This course aims to provide the student with the knowledge and skill necessary for good citizenship. Students examine such topics as constitutional principles underlying federalism, the role of political parties and interest groups, the duties and powers of the presidency, the legislative process, and the Free Enterprise system in the economy.


Economics Teacher: Mr. Miesle
Credit: .5 Prerequisites: Grade 12 (Senior Requirement)
This class studies the roles of individuals, business, government, and foreign trade in the American economy. Emphasis is placed on consumer buying, saving, investing, borrowing and insuring.
 
Modern World History Teacher: Mr. Miesle
Credit: 1 Prerequisites: Grade 9 (Freshman Requirement)

In addition to the textbook this history course requires students to do floor talks, reports, and library research. This course considers not only the powerful people, but also the common people of each period – how they thought, believed and lived.

Credit: 1 Prerequisites: (Freshman Requirement)(Must have a “B+” or higher in previous Social Studies course work or have teacher’s permission)

Students will begin with a study of the Age of Exploration and will conclude with a review of the Contemporary Western World.  Emphasis will be placed on an analysis of primary source documents, independent and group projects, classroom debates and simulations.



Social Studies Electives

Current Events Teacher: Mr. Miesle
Credit: 1 Prerequisites: Grade 10+

Students will understand the world through “Current Events”.  The student will be required to pay for a weekly classroom paper that connects the student to the world.  Discussion of world events and debating the issues are a big part of each day’s activities.


History of War-Civil  Teacher: Mr. Miesle
Credit: .5 Prerequisites: Grades 11+ (For college bound students) (B Avg. in Social Studies course work)

This course provides the student with background knowledge on the reasons for the Civil War.  Students will analyze and evaluate the battles of the war and discuss the implication of the decisions made by civilian and military leaders.  This course requires book reviews outside the text.


History of Modern Wars   Teacher: Mr. Miesle
Credit: .5 Prerequisites: Grade 11+ (For college bound students) (B Avg. in Social Studies course work)
This course aims to provide the student with the economical, historical, political, and military aspects of the conflict in Korea, Vietnam and the Persian Gulf. Students will be required to write an analysis of secondary readings and draw conclusions for the reasons the U.S. entered these wars.  This course requires book reviews outside the text. 

Sociology Teacher: Mr. Lehman
Credit: .5 Prerequisites: Grade 11+
This course consists of an analysis of the ways people interact with one another and within groups; examines relationships in social institutions; studies the organization of societies; looks at vital issues and social concerns.

Psychology Teacher: Mr. Lehman
Credit: .5 Prerequisites: Grades 11+

The study of psychology introduces students to the systematic and scientific study of the behavioral and mental processes of human beings.Students are exposed to the psychological facts, principles and phenomena associated with each of the major sub-fields within psychology.


Honors Criminal Justice Teacher: Mr. Lehman
Credit: 1 Prerequisites: Grade 11+ (“B” average in previous Social Studies course work and teacher’s approval)

The Criminal Justice Course will focus on the political, social and psychological aspects of crime as well as the justice system. Students will examine issues in the courts today as well as examining various theories and strategies used today as well as in the past in the criminal justice system that range from explaining why crime happens to the theories of the rehabilitation system.  Students will examine data related to various topics to justify and explain their conclusions. Students will participate in debates and mock trials through the course of the year ranging on a variety of topics.


Honors Global Studies Teacher: Mr. Miesle
Credit: 1 Prerequisites: Grade 10+ (“B” average in previous Social Studies course work and teacher’s approval)

Students will examine the current major events and issues affecting the world at large.  Students will research countries of personal interest and use their research to formulate Model United Nations resolutions.  Students will discuss, debate, and present information to their peers.  Guest speakers will speak on a variety of topics to the class.  Students who participate in a Model UN competition will gain extra-credit points for participation.
